Family Counseling for Eating Disorders

Maudsley therapy, also known as Family-Based Treatment (FBT), is an evidence-based approach primarily used for treating eating disorders. This therapy involves the whole family in the recovery, empowering parents to take an active role in helping their child regain a healthy relationship with food and body image. The treatment typically consists of three phases: weight restoration, gradual return to normal habits, and addressing any psychological issues related to the eating disorder. By fostering family support and communication, Maudsley therapy aims to create a nurturing environment conducive to lasting recovery.

Family can be the key to recovery. When a child is struggling with an ED, it is crucial that the parent(s) come to each session and include multiple sessions with all family members who live in the home or have direct influence over the child's eating and access to food. Sessions are designed to support the caregivers with psychoeducation, model how to encourage eating, and give the adolescent time to share their concerns. With this treatment, two family dinner sessions allow the therapist to observe the family's eating routines and conversation around eating. This is done in the office.

Family therapy is a commitment for everyone, but studies show that treating an ED within the first year of behaviors with weight restoration to 85% of BMI has the highest rate of full, lasting recovery. Sessions are once per week for 45-60 minutes, with an average of 12-16 sessions.
